Has anyone seen/heard anything about this show? All I know is its made by the same people that did Dr Who. The name is a ref. to an organization that the Doctor encounters often. They were founded, I think it was Queen Elizabeth, to protect England from Aliens. According to the one preview I saw it, it looks like they use the alien tech that is left behind to fight off aliens. At least thats what I know from Watching Doctor Who. I'm checking out the website right now.

Comcast on-demand had a couple previews/behind the scenes. And BBC America was really hyping it this last weekend. They played all the Captain Jack H Dr Who episodes. (with our favorite invisible man/Doctor).
Captain Jack is an interesting character. He was a swindler/ con man. He would sell space junk to other travellers, tell them its really valuable, then do his deals during WWII in the middle of bombing raids over London. Conveniently blows it up before the buy can look at what he bought, and buys them a drink with the money he took from them. Funny line - Two robots hit him with a "defabricazer" ray. Does exactly like it sounds, it disintegrates fabric. All his clothes dematerialize before our eyes. Then they threaten to replace his head with a dog, or a cat... He reaches behind him to pull a ray gun out of seemingly thin air. Right before he blows them up, they ask, "Where did that come from?" refering the the gun. He responds, "You don't want to know!" |

Not bad, but I was disappointed that ep 1 was just an extended version of the preview I saw. It added a little twist at the end that I didn't foresee. I've added it to my TiVo todo list.

Real trivia:
Torchwood started out as an anagram of Doctor Who in an attempt to foil any plots to steal the film prints before they got on air back in 2005! The excitement over new Who was so high at that point, people were afraid of leaks (which did occur). Out of that grew the show with Captain Jack Harkness and all the rest. Fictional origins: Torchwood as an institute was established by Queen Victoria in the late 1880s-90s (see Doctor Who: Tooth and Claw, series two, 2006) in attempt not only to protect England from alien invaders but also to keep an eye on the Doctor, who she perceived to be an even more dangerous threat. The institute is so secret even U.N.I.T. (the United Nations International Taskforce) doesn't know it exists. I will give one word of warning about Cap'n Jack: he's not the same man he is in Doctor Who. So if you are looking for the happy, go lucky, eye roving, fun guy, don't. He's lost a lot of his spark in the series and it's not fully explained why until you see the cross-over episodes of DW (series 3): Utopia, The Sound of Drums and The Last of the Time Lords (and, even then, it's not a satisfactory explanation [to me, at any rate]). Also, Torchwood is not family friendly. I personally don't think being able to run around cussing at situations that adult (it came across more as a bunch of twelve year olds getting away with something they shouldn't, but that's just me) and there were other things I could live without, but I guess, to judge by the number of positive reviews given this show, I am in the minority. To each his/her own. Apologies from the resident Whovian. Couldn't resist! |

Ok over all I liked it. Ghost Machine is the third show in the series so I am spending tie trying to catch up. I also missed the first 10 minutes, that didn't help anything.
It looks promissing but I'll have to watch a few more. One thing it has going for it, no real opposition on any of the net works. ![]() |
