I thought she was going to take that Sonic Pen. Sarah Jane has the lipstick, why can't she have one.
I'd like Donna, but I'd also like to see another companion, like that Earth historian from the xmass episode. |

The Fires of Pompeii is up next. The Doctor and Donna go visit the city before the mountain blows its top. Should be interesting.
Actually, I was thinking Partners in Crime had similar characters and set up as the SJA: Invasion of the Bane, only Ms. Foster didn't have the charisma or the menace that Mrs. Wormwood had. She was just a little too sweet to pull it off. Having another sonic device would just overload an already overloaded field. The screwdriver is way overused, it's more like a magic wand than a tool. The only thing missing are the semi-Latin terms to focus a spell with. It may be past time the Doctor really loses his sonic screwdriver and has to use more conventional and clever means to deal with a situation (like he did in Smith and Jones or after the ss got destroyed in The Visitation [5th Doctor]). Another companion would help to change the dynamic between the Doctor and the female (cause, y'know as long as RTD is in charge there will never be a male companion unless the female one already exists nor will there two female companions at the same time [now say that w/o taking a breath]), like it did for 9 and Rose when Jack joined them in series 1. I think it would be a nice change if there was another companion-someone who lasts for more than one to three episodes. It would also be nice if there were changes mid-series ... Oh well, we'll just have to wait until Steven Moffat takes over or something. What I don't like is Rose returning. Aaaarrrrgggghhhh.

Hey I can't believe were discussing Dr. Who here. It's one of my favorite shows. I missed the Christmas episode but I saw the last one. I was actually
impressed that Donna wanted to go with the Doctor. The last time they met she acted so timid and scared by him. It's nice to see that during the time she
and the Doctor last saw each other she changed and became a little more outgoing. Also the fact that this companion will not fall in love with the Doctor is
good. Just how many women are going to fall for him? Anyway the fat created aliens were cute and I have to admit it was kinda weird that an alien race would
use fat as a way of breeding. As for Rose reappearing I was actually shocked. I think there is something more going on with that and I can't wait to see
what unfolds.
Also yeah I would like to see another companion. In the old Doctor Who series the 1st Doctor was an old man and he traveled with his granddaughter and two of her teachers. Also I agree it seems like the lifespan of the third companion is always to short. And I liked Jack when he got on board and they just had to get rid of him. Although then again I'm a huge fan of Torchwood. Anyway I can't wait for tonight's episode. Pompei the day it goes off. That's going to be creppy. Although not as creepy as Blink. |

Welcome to the discussion!
I think of the 'romance' of the Doctor with Rose and Martha as the Russell T. Davies Master Plan, LOL. Oh wait, snarl, snarl, snarl. It was fine with Rose up to a point, she did 9 a lot of good, but with 10 things got a little bit out of hand. Martha, the oh so adult, sophisticated doctor in training following the Doctor with puppy-dog eyes just made me want to choke. I wasn't sure at first, but Donna is definitely turning into a major breath of fresh air, much to my surprise. She argues with him! Not quite Tegan, but definitely along the same lines. Hopefully, they don't go too far though. The arguing could quickly go overboard. Blink. Wonderful episode. Rose returning... hmm. Well, there is a bunch of rumor flowing around about why she's back: Sigh.

Last nights episode was awsome. I agree the fact that Donna argues with the Doctor is truely a breath of fresh air. It's interesting to see that someone
will look at the Doctor and say hey you can't just stand around and do nothing. And yeah it is a fine line between bickering a little and to crossing a
line. And with the whole Rose/10 relationship I always saw it as the two of them falling in love but with the Doctor he is going to outlive Rose so he pretty
much stayed quiet about it until its to late. With Rose she also had insecurities because everytime the Doctor and her faced a huge danger he would try to get
rid of her so she always questioned her place. I'm a romantic at heart so I always wanted them to get togeher and with her coming back there is a chance
that I might get my wish.
And the next episode looks like Doctor and Donna are going to encounter the squid head with the bright white balls again. I hope that doesn't mean there facing another possible Satan incarnation. |

That was an excellent episode. It was really creapy to hear the seers know who exactly the Doctor was. Good times. Donna isn't as bad as my first
impression. I like the CGI, its still cheesey like the old time Dr Who, but much cooler.

Synch: spoiler--it's like you do for bold or italics in ezcode: [ spoiler ] [/ spoiler ] sans the spaces in the brackets.
Each forum seems to have its own way of dealing with these-the one I stole the spoiler code from has a text box like our quotes only with the text blanked out until you mouse over it. Fires of Pompeii was an excellent episode. Donna and the Doctor really do seem to work well together. Favorite lines: Donna: You stopped it with a water pistol. I so bloody love you! The Doctor telling her she was right that he needed someone to stop him on occasion. He gets lost in the bigger picture sometimes and needs to be reminded of the details. Very well done. Nortek: I'm a romantic at heart so I always wanted them to get togeher and with her coming back there is a chance that I might get my wish. No offense, but I really, truly hope not. The writing team and RTD would then totally betray everything I love about Doctor Who, all 44+ years of it. The Doctor explained to Rose why he moves on in School Reunion, why companions leave. It's the reason DW has lasted for as long as it has. Change is, to borrow a term, standard operating procedure. The show finds renewal in such change; you never know what is coming around the corner--something new, exciting, different. There are companions that I have liked, others I didn't and those I knew to wait through those, soon there would be a new person to replace him/her (Mel Bush [7th] comes to mind. Oh that high, squeaky voice gets on my nerves). I am a bit of a romantic myself, however, and would have liked very much if the Eighth Doctor had hooked up with Dr. Grace Holloway (if things had worked out better with the TV movie, like the script for starters or not trying to Amercanize a British show), but there again, would be danger. There are limits beyond which even the "family" show that Doctor Who is shouldn't go.

Continuation ....
Some of the decisions made by RTD rival some of those made John Nathan-Turner (JN-T Era Review) during his tenure. Did I mention Mel? The actress who played the character was chosen merely on the strength of her ability, get this, to scream. Too bad she never met Sylar (and she being a red head and all ...) I liked the relationship angle in the first series, it was a different approach for Who and it was really nice to know that the companion actually had a life outside the one she led in the TARDIS. I liked meeting Jackie and Mickie, knowing they cared for her, a lot. It was a nice change. We didn't get so much of Martha's family, though they seemed an interesting bunch in their own right. To be honest, I think I was just really caught up in the euphoria (it was, indeed, euphoria) of Who returning to television. More recently, however, I have finally begun to understand the moaning and whining which occurred at the same time, with people complaining that this approach was not true (or true to) Doctor Who. After a while, the whole thing between Rose and the Doctor seemed to be nothing more than just fodder for all the 'shippers on the Net. It really got old when she was finally really forced to leave. I know this isn't a popular stance to take in the era of current Who fandom, but, I was really, really glad when Rose left and when Martha left as well. The Doctor explained why he and his companions part ways in School Reunion. Thus it should be. He's meant to be the lonely traveler, the lone god. He's never been in a long term relationship and when he's been too close to one, he's avoided it--such as he did with Sarah Jane. The 3rd Doctor was truly uncomfortable with Jo Grant when she announced her engagement to the scientist. Also, he realized that he'd just lost his best friend, and the Doctor's truly horrible with goodbyes. I guess you could classify me as a Traditional Whovian in the end. I like the Doctor with his varying companions, changing over time, never static, never complacent. When the time comes and Donna leaves at the end of this series, a new companion will come to the fore, and quite possibly a new Doctor in 2010 as well, if rumor is to be believed. If so, then on with the show.
