So did Ben teleport to the Sahara Desert, Desmond style? If so who is Ben's constant?

I don't think Ben teleported there Desmond style because it seems that only Desmond's consciousness is moved through time, and not his physical body. I
think Ben, very litterally, teleported. Time-traveling is up for debate, but it isn't necessary.
The reason for this is that Ben would have had to have been in Tunisia in 2005, AFTER the 6 make it off the island. If he was there in 2005, that would mean he teleported back from afterwards, which doesn't really make any applicable sense. If you noticed, Ben was wearing a Dharma jacket with "Hallifax" on it, he was one of the Dharma scientists and is shown in the "Orchid Station" video (the one where the bunny appears out of thin air). This wasn't just any jacket though because it had a logo on it which would indicate the station it belonged to. This logo is not the Orchid station logo, nor is it any other logo we've seen, so it must have originated from an undisclosed station. Yet, looking into that jacket further it is most definitely designed for cold weather. To me, this indicates that Ben had to be somewhere on the island which warranted the gear. Still, as horrible a person as Ben is, somehow he's still human.

Is that the same desert that, oh cr@p what is her name, the blond lady from the boat found that polar bear? I'm not so sure it is, nor does it have to be.
I do think the polar bear, the 2 bunnies and Ben waking up in the desert/asking what year it is are all related. Probably the Hallifax station (temple?).

Oh nice thought. It could be the same desert that Charlotte found the PBear....

This epi also set up an interesting conflict between Ben & Desmond - although they've been on this little island together, I don't think there has
been a scene where they've actually met face to face? Sayid was obviously a bit psycho about Naomi being murdered - imagine how Desmond would react if Ben
killed Penny... After the Constant, Desmond's role became even more significant and 4.9 makes me think he's going to be even more central to the story
- He's Othello trying to return to his Penelope, but instead of a suitor, Penny has a stalker. I wish I had time to go back & rewatch several episodes
- esp. the one where Jack meets Desmond. The thing that frustrates me is keeping my timeline straight of what happened when esp. now with the flash forwards.
I'm really looking forward to tonight's epi "Something Nice Back Home" - the preview clip claims "the island takes one survivor for its
own" while it's showing a clip of Claire holding Aaron...we know Jack doesn't die since he's one of the six...

Okay, I just watched this Epi... yeah I know I'm two episodes behind. I have not read this thread yet for fear that you have all discussed some
developments from the next episode 4.10. So I just wanted to say how evil Ben is, but how awesome an actor Michael Emerson is. When Alex got shot my jaw
dropped, that scene was so unbelievable and Emerson acted it so perfectly. I was struck by how it was more emotional to watch Ben's face when the gun when
off than to see Alex get the bullet. So, wow!!! Widmore and Linus face-off, super cool! Oh, but Penny is on the chopping block! Oh my! Okay, more after I watch
4.10 and read the thread.
*edit* Okay, so I got brave and read the thread. I think Ben got to the Sahara in the plane he said he chartered. Remember he said he took Des' boat, then hopped a plane. Maybe the plane went down, his co-pilot threw him out, he seemed like he landed there on his back. He had a nasty cut on his arm, maybe they lowered him down by the arm and then let him drop. I don't know. Still I won't rule out the island's weird properties, but I definitely don't see it being a Desmond-style consciousness jump, but then who knows. I think there is some time-bendy stuff going on because Ben asked the clerk at the hotel-desk if it was in fact 2005, which means he was not quite sure. Hmmmm... such a good episode. Things blow up, people die, we get to see smoke-monster eat people, awesome!

More stuff about the epi, while I'm rewatching the season.
In case you haven't noticed, I like numbers. Here are some fun number-things from the epi: 1622 - This was the code Alex used to disarm the security fence. This happened before the boaties assaulted the Barracks. 1622 was the year of the Jamestown Massacre, where the Native Americans in the region of Jamestown colony attacked those who just came off the boat from Europe. It seems that this assault has the roles reversed. 14J - This was the warning code that the automated voice on the phone used when the fence was disabled and Locke answered the call. 14J is described by "About.com" as: "14J - - Air Defense Tactical Operations Center Operator Major duties. The air defense tactical operations center operator supervises or serves as a member of a manual early warning network (MEWN) section, team, or platoon in operations and intelligence functions. Other fun stuff I love about this epi. Ben was playing this piece when Locke came to tell him about the call from the warning system: "Prelude in C Sharp Minor. Ben is playing this piece from Sergei Rachmaninoff on the piano, right before the phone call. Some British publications include the title The Burning of Moscow or The Day of Judgement." (Source is a blog by screenname dj4our on multiply.com). So, the burning part and the judgment part can be seen well here. Lastly, I think that Ben is trapped off-island. After hearing the "let's move the island" scenario from the last epi. I think that Ben came over, somehow unknown, and that he has lost the island. The 6 can't seem to get back (Jack kept trying) as we saw in the Season 3 finale to get back, but couldn't. If they've moved the island so that Widmore can't find it, maybe they sacrificed their own ability to go there. Which would explain why Ben is spending so very much time off island. |
